Videos: A New Intro Video For Moi, And A Funnier One By Others…

Since I am trying to promote my videos to those that don’t already know me, I figured I would…well…try harder. So I made one that specifically introduces myself and the online course. It’s not really new information, but I tried to make it kind of cute. So, if you’re curious:

Also, in poking around on YouTube, I came upon the following economics parody, entitled “Economic Breakdown Song.” It made me smile. Hopefully it will make you smile too. 🙂

I will try to not be jealous that their video is funnier than mine.

    Marry me. I’m only half-kidding.

BIG improvement on the original intro: the heckler comments are a great help (although they disappear too quickly).

You should record a laugh track and press the button each time you need feedback to help you relax. You still have a bit of the deer in the headlights look and a morbid fear of smiling, but you’re definitely headed in the right direction.

I’ve really enjoyed the videos so far. They jump right into a bunch of things, the casual-wannabe-economist-who’s-never-taken-a-single-econ-class, such as myself has never heard of, but finds totally interesting.

I think you’d have a lot to gain by choosing more site-appropriate examples for your miniature economies. no offense to professors/secretaries/lawnmowers/carwashes, but they’re not exactly doing it with models… at least not in these contexts

Thank you all for the feedback! The one about the timing of the comments is especially helpful, since I obviously play the video over to assess the timing, but I also already know what the comments say….

I think I might just have a deer in headlights look in general? I dunno. 🙂 For this one, I am technically reading off of cue cards (read, a cue whiteboard) for part of it, since I clearly don’t do well on my own when I don’t have specific information to convey (see first intro video if you don’t believe me).

@ Ben: I see your point about the examples. Personally, I am agnostic to the 3 stooges example, but I do like the professor/secretary setup. Maybe they’re doing it with each other. =P

I think the timing of the comments is fine. I find that I often know what they said without having had the experience of reading them, which is quite interesting and which I’m sure wouldn’t happen if they stayed up for too long.

Forget about the deer-headlight issue: I just saw video 2, and since you were obviously in your element with an example you knew thoroughly, the increase in your comfort level was obvious. My wife wants you to smile more, but I think it best that come naturally as you relax about the presentation, or it’ll look forced. Just think of your audience as friends who like your sense of humor and are eager to learn this material. Gizmo, perhaps.

By the way, I think the 10 minute limit works, even though it is being imposed on you artificially. It is enough time to clearly make one point and keeps it from getting boring.

Anyway, keep up the good work.
