Ever Wonder Where All Of Your Money Goes?

I’m not sure how my RA does it, but he manages to find the most randomly awesome nerdy links and articles for me…it’s not even that I specifically ask, he just stumbles upon great things when perusing the world wide webiverse. (He can also play the hell out of a keyboard, but that is another matter. If you are curious, see Jarret Izzo here.) The latest is a charming visual on where all of our hard-earned dollars run off to:

I’m not sure why these were the two things that stood out to me, but I am amused by…

  • the ratio of spending on alcoholic beverages to spending on reading. This does not bode well for my career prospects. Maybe I will turn the blog into a drinking game and start brewing EDIWM beer. (I am nothing if not resourceful.)
  • the asterisk next to tobacco that says “including supplies.” It reminds me of a glassblowing class at MIT entitled “for tobacco purposes only,” and I will leave the conversation there. 🙂

The graphic is from a site called, and the content is pretty true to the title. There are a number of other interesting graphics for you to peruse if you get bored, and I may feature more of them in the future. For now, I am going to go buy some cleaning supplies, since I am pretty sure I am nowhere near the $639 mark, and that makes me feel a little dirty. (See? even I can’t escape the idea of mental accounting.)

It’s too bad this chart doesn’t show pre-tax dollars. The “taxes” slice would be pretty big.

Apparently potential law students like looking at spending also:

Some of the comments are kind of funny…

well there’s a good chance I won’t enjoy the book as much as I’d expect, so I’d rather borrow it from a friend or library. I only buy books if I’m going to read it again or it’ll look good on my bookshelf.

To the contrary, I know I (or that girl across the bar) will enjoy the alcoholic beverage much more than I expect. Besides, I’ve tried mooching free drinks…friends tend to remind me that I owe them a drink more than that I haven’t returned their books.
